Rally dos Ventos

Red Bull Rally dos Ventos

There are all kinds of adventures in the world and most of them involve various forms of transportation, like paddling, biking and running and a few of them even go through a desert. But there’s nothing quite like Red Bull Rally dos Ventos – equal parts kiteboarding, sand surfing, running – and a navigational challenge. Competitors were charged with crossing the lagoon-filled desert of Northern Brasil. No race course other than the start and finish. Sound easy? Well, maybe – until you get lost.

KITEBOARDING FILM

KITEBOARDING FILM

What a story, it’s got tropical water, beautiful girls, aeroplanes, pirates, fantastic riding and good music. Jeremie Tronet has just left his sponsors Ocean Rodeo, but to prove he’s not stopping production of his kiteboarding film online, he’s released this beauty.

Shot on location in Union Island, the story takes you on the journey of a kiteboard as it’s delivered to Jeremie. On route in a light aircraft, the pilot throws it out the window, for it to be found by pirates! The pirates use it to hold their rum, (like all pirates would) until a kid steals it and throws it overboard. Found by another kid on the beach, he sells it to a grocery story, because bindings are great for storing pineapples apparently. Long story short, a pretty girl buys it, a kiter finds it and then proceeds to thrown down some moves with it.

Great story, great location and very good editing. Check out the movie below

get to know the Wind Window

The Wind Window

The WInd window is something that all kiters understand and master. If you are a beginner, spend some time to understand it and have it really clear since this is the theory for all that is going to happen in the next lessons.

Some students do not pay special attention to this part, since they think it is theoretical and boring. This is a huge mistake because if they do not have this super clear the will do mistakes once they have a real kite in their hands.

To make it simple:

  • what is the wind window? the wind window is the space where your kite moves.
  • What is this area? this zone is a 3D space, that is a quarter of a sphere.

Lets see it in the following drawing:

wind window

  • What is the green area? the green area is called the edge of the window and is where the kite generates less power. In other words, if your kite is placed on this area you will feel less pull from it.
  • What is the most powerful area then? It is the one placed right in front of you, it is called the power zone:

wind window 2

  • What is where the kite lines meet? that is supposed to be you, or the rider.
  • Can I place my kite out of the wind window? No, if you manage to do it the kite will fall off.
  • Where is the wind window pointing to, oriented? That will depend on the wind direction, so once you get to the beach find out the wind direction, and after that imagine in your head what would be the wind window.

An another way to explain it:

In the power zone, the kite is more directly in contact with wind. At the edge, the wind “sees” only the semi-circular arc shape, and produces minimal pressure changes over the kite so the power is kept at bay. In the power zone, the kite’s wind profile is larger and pressure changes are more extreme, causing the kite to generate enough power to easily lift you off the ground, or drag you across a field. It is very important to first get lessons, or use a trainer kite (which is very small and generates minimal power in the middle of the power zone) to get used to the forces of the wind on the kite before going out with a kite that can generate enough power to lift you off the ground.

In CostaKite we will teach you all this things efficiently so that you get the most out of your kite course!!

Rules and right of way

Kiteboarding rules and right of way

First of all we have to mention 2 main rules:

Golden rule: If you are passing upwind, keep your kite HIGH.
If you are passing downwind, keep your kite LOW.

Common sense rule: Remember to use common sense when applying the rules and stay clear from other riders whenever possible!

Rule 1

The rider entering the water from the beach has right of way over the incoming rider. Why? 95% of accidents happen on the land.

Rule-1-kiteboarding-rights-of-way

Rule 2

The rider with their right hand and shoulder forwards has priority over the oncoming rider (left hand and shoulder forwards) and should keep their course. The rider with their left hand and shoulder forwards should give way and alter their course downwind. Why? To avoid a collision.

rule 2 right of way kite

Rule 3

When two riders are travelling in the same direction, the faster rider coming up from behind must give way to the slower rider in front. Why? The slower rider will find it difficult to see the rider behind them.

rule3 right of way kiteboarding

Rule 4

The rider surfing a wave has priority over the one who is jumping or going in the opposite direction. Why? When surfing a wave, it is more difficult to maneuver the kite.

Rule-4-kiteboarding-rights-of-way

Rule 5

Right of way must be given to other ocean and beach users. Kiteboarders must travel downwind of them.
Why? Regular ocean and beach users may not understand the behaviour and dangers of kiteboarding.

Rule-5-kiteboarding-rights-of-way

Rule 6

To jump, a rider must have a clear safety zone of 50m downwind and 30m upwind.
Why? When a rider jumps they travel downwind.
